Lettrage, chemises chamarrées et surimpressions envoient des signaux explicites à l’acheteur potentiel : dans Evolution, The Hollies versent dans une pop psychédélique bon teint. Et ils le font avec talent, négociant habilement le passage d’une pop music tout en claquement de mains et amourettes en forme de gros ballons roses, vers une inspiration plus torturée, introspective, aux mesures irrégulières, et aux rythmes incertains.
Cet album est sans nul doute celui où s’exprime le mieux la jeune recrue Tony Hicks, plénipotentiaire à la guitare (à la sonorité parfois distordue), mais également au dulcimer, et au banjo. De plus, les dix chansons, qui ont été composées par le groupe (et plus précisément par le trio composé par le chanteur Allan Clarke, le guitariste et choriste Graham Nash, et Hicks), offrent d’agréables transitions entre la pop britannique des débuts (« Carrie-Anne », qui marquera durablement, jusqu’à The La’s) et les chemins plus escarpés du psychédélisme (« Have You Ever Loved Somebody? »).
Intégrant le Top 20 britannique, Evolution séduira même les charts américains, se classant en quarante-troisième position, le single « Jennifer Eccles » atteignant la quarantième place de sa catégorie.
