Deux choses ont toujours caractérisé la musique d’OutKast, et donc celle de sa moitié, Big Boi : la légèreté apparente des influences funks et le désir d’amener une forme de brutalité, une certaine radicalité. Toujours respectueux de ce credo, Big Boi s’associe à Sleepy Brown, ami de longue date, compagnon de route depuis toujours, qui a notamment sévi dans le collectif de beatmakers Organized Noize, qui a contribué à placer Atlanta sur la carte du rap américain au début des années 1990. A l’été 2021, déjà, sortait l’excellent single Can’t Sleep. Le sample du morceau (Last Night) I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All de The 5th Dimension sorti en 1972, et son clip chaud-bouillant, donnaient la cadence à cet album, Big Sleepover. Entre sensualité exacerbée limite cradingue sur Baller ou Animalz, et grooves habiles sur Do Ya Best, il y a cette envie d’être frontal, de revenir aux basiques. Comme sur les traps limite scolaires Sucka Free ou The Big Sleep Is Over. Les vieux potes sont de la partie avec notamment la présence de Killer Mike et Backbone sur le morceau Return Of The Dope Boi, industriel, ravageur, qui montre que Big Boi est capable de presque tout faire avec une aisance déconcertante. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
