Destin étonnant que celui du groupe londonien Mumford & Sons, lancé sur la vague frétillante du succès par une premie album habillé de vieille tradition bluegrass, folk et country. Après avoir travaillé avec Radiohead puis Arcade Fire, leur producteur Markus Dravs serait-il un visionnaire ? Toujours est-il qu'il est encore aux manettes de ce deuxième recueil au titre ambitieux.
Donner une suite à Sigh No More n'était pas chose facile pour le quatuor qui a préféré jouer l'assurance plutôt que prendre des risques inutiles. Babel coule ainsi sans difficulté mais sans réelles aspérités si ce n'est quelques dos d'âne enregistrés sur « I Will Wait », « Ghosts That We Knew » ou « Hopeless Wanderer ». Une tactique qui satisfait les aficionados de ce son millésimé, assorti d'un banjo ou couvert de cuivres mais surtout ici rempli par le chant impressionnant de Marcus Mumford (« Babel »), appuyé en choeur par ses camarades. C'est d'ailleurs cet aspect « chorale de rugbymen », présent tout du long, qui pèse sur les harmonies hissées au forceps.
Nul doute que malgré sa tonalité sombre, voire apocalyptique sur certains morceaux, Babel a de beaux jours devant lui et particulièrement lors des prochains rendez-vous en festival où la colonie de plus en plus grande de fans lui fera fête. Une édition limitée de l'album ajoute trois titres bonus dont une reprise de « The Boxer » avec Jerry Douglas.
