Timo-Veikko Valve
Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve divides his time between Finland and Australia, where he is the principal cellist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He performs on both modern and Baroque cellos.
Timo-Veikko Valve, often known as Tipi, was born in 1982 in Finland. His family was musically oriented in a general way, and he started cello lessons at age six after a teacher said he looked like a cellist. Valve attended the West Helsinki Music College and moved from there to the youth department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1997. He stayed on for the regular program, graduating in 2007 after studies with Heikki Rautasalo and Marko Ylönen. He also studied at the Edsberg Music Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, from 2002 to 2006. Valve took master classes with internationally prominent figures such as Natalia Gutman, Gary Hoffman, Steven Isserlis, and Frans Helmerson, and he took chamber music courses from Vladimir Mendelssohn and Vjatseslav Novikov. Along the way, he won various prizes, including second place in the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in 2000. Around the turn of the century, not yet 20 years old, he began his professional career, appearing with such groups as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway, and the Helsinki Philharmonic. He was also a member of the Helsinki Cello Ensemble.
Valve became the principal cellist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2006, and he has often played solo parts with the group. He made his recording debut in 2008 on the album A Composer's Portrait: Christian Lindberg, Vol. 2, and he appeared on several Australian Chamber Orchestra albums, including a 2015 reading of Vivaldi's Four Seasons violin concertos. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with major orchestras in both Finland and Australia and as a chamber player or recitalist, he has appeared in South Africa and throughout Europe. In 2024, Valve joined pianist Aura Go on the ABC Classic label, releasing a cycle of Beethoven's cello sonatas that also included cello-and-piano works by Webern.
