6LACK breaks up the wait for his third album with this descriptively titled short-form release. Despite its intermediary status, its material comes across as deeply considered and hints at creative growth, with the singer/rapper even more persuasive with heartfelt sentiments despite being as understated as ever. In the forlorn lockdown ballad "Outside," he's not too proud to sound charmingly innocent and tenderly genuine as he proclaims "I'm excited just to hold your hand, I'm still stuck on love like it's Krazy Glue," and he's open elsewhere in other ways, chuckling, cracking wise, and even admitting that he's "just tryin' to stay afloat." The brash and casual "ATL Freestyle" and the Lil Baby collaboration "Know My Rights" might get the most attention, but "Elephant in the Room" -- a slow-motion trap-funk hybrid co-produced by underrecognized innovator DJ Battlecat and the highly decorated Timbaland -- contends for the track with the highest potency. This effectively keeps fans quenched while increasing anticipation for the follow-up to the Top Ten album East Atlanta Love Letter.
