Trio Con Brio Copenhagen
Even beyond the realm of performance, the Trio con Brio Copenhagen plays a major role in Danish musical life. The group provides artistic direction to two important Danish musical institutions.
The Trio con Brio Copenhagen was formed in 1999 at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, where all three members were students. From the outset, the group has consisted of what the members call two "overlapping musical pairs"; violinist Soo-Jin Hong and cellist Soo-Kyung Hong are sisters from South Korea, and Soo-Kyung is married to the pianist Jens Elvekjaer, from Denmark. The Trio con Brio Copenhagen had instruction from the Alban Berg Quartet and pianist Ferenc Rados in its early days. The group moved to Copenhagen, where it has continued to be based. In 2007, Trio con Brio Copenhagen released a self-titled album on the Azica label, featuring piano trios by Ravel, Dvořák, and Ernest Bloch. Two years later, the group issued an album of Mendelssohn trios on the Marquis Records label.
The Trio con Brio Copenhagen has appeared at major venues in continental Europe, Britain, and the U.S., including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Pierre Boulez-Saal in Berlin, Wigmore Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, among others. The trio has a commitment to contemporary music, and Scandinavian composers Per Nørgård, Bent Sørensen, and Sven-David Sandström have written new works for the group. The Trio con Brio Copenhagen provides artistic direction to two important Danish institutions, the Chamber Music at Lundsgaard Festival and the Hellerup Chamber Music Society in Copenhagen. In 2013, the Trio con Brio Copenhagen released the album Phantasmagoria: Danish Piano Trios on the Dacapo label, and since then, the group has recorded for either Dacapo or Orchid Classics. The group released the album The Passenger: Weinberg, Schubert on the latter label.
