The Golden Boys

Imagine, if you will, a lean and mean Pogues brought up not on the Dubliners and Tommy Makem, but rather the 13th Floor Elevators and Doug Sahm, and you're heading down the Golden Boys' dusty road. Formed in the mid-2000s, the Austin-based ensemble plays a greasy beer-battered sort of roots punk that benefits from more than a few doses of strychnine in the deep fryer. Their albums -- they've released four full-lengths as of 2010 -- offer a deranged mix of psychedelic choogle, tail feather-shakin' R&B, twisted country-folk, and sloppy rock & roll. The Golden Boys' stellar 2009 full-length, Thee Electric Wolfman, featured the assistance of kindred spirits the Spider Bags, Oakland-via-Texas psych maven Greg Ashley, and Memphis' inimitable Ross Johnson, among others. Singer/guitarist John Wesley Coleman III also released his debut solo album, Steal My Mind, in 2009, while in 2010 the band appeared on the Austin scene sampler Casual Victim Pile, compiled by Matador founder Gerard Cosloy.
