Terry
Playing simple songs with strong melodies influenced by post-punk and early Flying Nun, Australian quartet TERRY boasted an impressive lineup made up of members from bands like UV Race, Total Control, and Dick Diver, and beginning in 2015 released a series of singles and albums, like 2017's excellent Remember Terry, that rivaled the work of the members' other bands. By the time the group issued 2023's Call Me Terry, the days of TERRY seeming like a side project were long over.
Guitarist Al Montfort played with UV Race, Total Control, and Dick Diver; drummer Zephyr Pavey was also in Total Control and fronted Eastlink; guitarist Xanthe Waite sang with Mick Harvey's band; and bassist Amy Hill was a member of Constant Mongrel. They formed TERRY in the mid-2010s, playing an intimate brand of indie pop that featured the members trading off vocals and sharing songwriting chores. They debuted with the "Talk About Terry" single on Upset the Rhythm in late 2015, then released one other single, "8 Girls," on Aarght! Records in mid-2016. Their full-length debut for Upset the Rhythm, TERRY HQ, followed in early July.
The bandmembers began writing their next album after returning from a string of tour dates, and in early 2017 they did some recording. The resulting songs were mastered by the ubiquitous Mikey Young, titled Remember Terry, and released by Upset the Rhythm in mid-2017. Working quickly, TERRY released their third album, the reliably hooky and sneakily witty I'm Terry, in August of 2018. Following the album's release, the band focused their attention on other musical projects, like Monfort and Hill's post-punk duo Sleeper & Snake and while also doing adult things like taking new jobs, moving, and having children. They were drawn back together by the enforced isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic and began sharing demos with each other in 2020. When the restrictions on gatherings began to loosen in 2021, they assembled at their rehearsal space to record the basics of an album. Further overdubs were done at the respective member's homes before the tracks were all put together and ready for release. The set was typically catchy indie pop with the occasional glam rock beat or political lyric. Titled Call Me Terry, the album was issued by long-time label Upset the Rhythm in April of 2023.
