Syssi Mananga

With a Congolese mother and a Belgian father, Syssi Mananga's cultural identity was split between Africa and Europe. In fact, her music quickly reflected this crossbreeding, fusing Kongo rhythms with folk, pop and even jazz, which she infused in New York after winning a scholarship to study in the United States. Singing in Lingala as well as in French and English, she released her debut album Retour aux Sources in 2013, featuring the hit track "Tala Ngai " and "Ndjele", among others. Subsequently, she released a number of tracks that earned her nominations in the Best Central African Artist category at international music ceremonies, such as the Kora Awards and Afrima Awards in 2016, AFRIMMA Awards in 2017, or Tam Tam d'Or de la Décennie in 2017. She has also won awards for some of her songs: Tam Tam D'or for "Ndjele " in 2013, Beatstreet Award in 2017 for "Chéri " or Beyond Music Creativity Award presented by the Tina Turner Foundation for "Matumaini " in 2019. Her track "Nawe", the second single from the album Mopepe Mama, due for release in 2021, has also reached the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Contest, whose jury includes celebrities such as Coldplay, Tom Waits, Dua Lipa and Laura Pausini.
