Svet Stoyanov

Svet Stoyanov is a Bulgarian American percussionist and educator known for his sensitivity, fluidity, and understated virtuosity. He is also a passionate supporter of new music and has commissioned numerous concertos, solos, and chamber pieces. Originally from Bulgaria, Stoyanov began studying percussion when he was 10 years old. After he graduated from high school in Pleven, Bulgaria, he travelled to Baltimore around 1999 to study with Robert van Sice at the Peabody Conservatory. In 2003, He completed his bachelor’s degree, and he also won the Concert Artists Guild International competition. Seeking further refinement, he completed his master’s degree at Yale in 2005 under the continued guidance of van Sice. Three years later, Stoyanov released his debut recording, Percussive Counterpoint, which featured his transcription of Reich’s Electric Counterpoint and other contemporary works. He began teaching at Miami University’s Frost School of Music in 2009, and in 2015 he was awarded tenure and promoted to director and associate professor of percussion studies. He released Paul Lansky: Textures & Threads in 2014, which was met with enthusiasm by critics. He became a founding member of The Percussion Collective when it was formed by van Sice in 2018. The ensemble has toured Europe and China, and premiered Christopher Theofanidis’ Drum Circles Concerto with the Oregon Symphony. Additionally, he has also collaborated with diverse artists such as flutist Jennifer Grim, the Miami Saxophone Quartet, and the Manhattan Transfer. In 2023, he appeared on the album Jennifer Higdon: Duo Duel; Concerto for Orchestra, with Matthew Strauss, Robert Spano, and the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Stoyanov continues to be very active with The Percussion Collective, as a solo artist, and in his roles at the Frost School of Music.
