Searows
Searows is the stage persona created by singer and songwriter Alec Duckart, whose music is as personal as it is powerfully atmospheric. Reflecting the gloomy beauty of the Pacific Northwest, which has been his home since childhood, Searows' music is dominated by the ghostly quaver of Duckart's falsetto vocals and the gentle, insistent strum of his acoustic guitar with electronic treatments shimmering in the background. Duckart had been sharing his music with his audience since he was in his early teens, and made a critical breakthrough with his homemade debut album, 2022's Guard Dog, which helped him earn a record deal for his powerful 2023 EP End of the World.
Alec Duckart was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on March 2, 2000. His family relocated to Portland, Oregon when he was young, and he lived there from then on. By the time he was 12 years old, Duckart was playing guitar and soaking up the influences of his parents' listening habits, with Sufjan Stevens, the Decemberists, and Iron & Wine in regular rotation on the family's sound system. Duckart was in junior high when he began writing songs, and he started making recordings of his work and posting them on SoundCloud for others to discover. Adopting a falsetto vocal style and ethereal arrangements, Duckart began making more elaborate tracks, recording and mixing the material by himself on an aging laptop computer, and he released his first single as Searows, "Used to be Friends," in 2022. Posting performances on social media helped him expand his audience, and Searows' music made its way to fellow singer-songwriter Ethel Cain, who invited him to open some shows for her. By the end of 2022, the first full-length Searows album was released, Guard Dog, which was warmly received by indie music writers, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Duckart also made a fan of Matt Maltese, the successful British-Canadian singer and songwriter. Maltese was about to launch a new label, Last Recordings on Earth, in association with Communion Records, and he reached out to Duckart, offering him the chance to be the new imprint's first signee. Duckart accepted, and the EP End of the World was issued by the label in 2023.
