A Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter able to transmute complex personal emotions into winsome indie pop songs, NoSo began releasing music at the end of the 2010s. After signing a deal with Partisan Records, they made their full-length debut with 2022's Stay Proud of Me. The project of Chicago native Baek Hwong, NoSo stands for "North/South," a shorthand reference to their Korean heritage. A guitarist since the age of 12, they began writing music seriously at University of Southern California where they studied popular music. They debuted in 2018 with "Allie," a warmly melodic song that showcased NoSo's uniquely percussive guitar style and airy vocals. By 2021, Hwong had come out as nonbinary and their ongoing exploration of gender identity became more prevalent in their songwriting. After joining Partisan Records' roster, they issued "Suburbia," a glowing indie pop song of growth and nostalgia set to lush synths and chiming guitars. Released the following year, NoSo's debut album, Stay Proud of Me, was an engaging coming-of-age story full of gently layered arrangements and honest songwriting.
