Daniel Ogren

Daniel Ögren's lush, playful music has roots in South American and Nordic folk music, exotica, psychedelic pop, and film scores, among many other genres, but remains ever-evolving and hard to pin down. The Swedish producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist has worked extensively with Anna von Hausswolff and other Scandinavian artists such as the Mary Onettes and Sven Wunder. He released his first album, Laponia, in 2011, and has since issued several limited cassettes and LPs. 2020's Fastingen-92 featured the instantly familiar-sounding "Idag," sung by Anna Ahnlund. The two formed a band called Dina Ögon and released their self-titled debut in 2021, followed by Oas in 2023. Ögren grew up on Kristinehamn, a small town in Värmland County, Sweden. He fell in love with music after seeing a band play Bolivian music at an annual carnival called Fastingen. He remains heavily influenced by South American music, particularly cumbia and huayno, as well as soundtrack composers such as Ennio Morricone and jazz musicians like Pat Metheny. During the early 2010s, Ögren played on several releases by Anna von Hausswolff and was a member of the indie pop band Mainekk. His jazzy, instrumental debut album, Laponia, was recorded in an old wooden church and released by the Hoob Jazz label in 2011. The more experimental Laponia II was issued as a limited cassette by Havtorn Records in 2013, and the cinematic Brev Till Kristinehamn followed in 2014. Sånga, a multimedia collaboration with artist Karin Granqvist, was released exclusively on vinyl in early 2015. Mountains, an album of playful instrumental pop, appeared late in the year. Ögren continued exploring dreamy, vintage-sounding compositions with Brev från Leksand, issued by Pomperipossa Records in 2018. Fastingen-92, named after Ögren's formative carnival experience during his childhood, was released by Sing a Song Fighter in 2020, with the single "Idag" featuring vocalist Anna Ahnlund. The song became an underground hit, and the two formed the soul-pop band Dina Ögon, debuting with a 2021 self-titled LP. Ahnlund provided wordless vocals on Laponia III, issued in early 2022. Dina Ögon's second album of smooth psychedelic soul, Oas, was released by Playground Music in early 2023. Also during the year, U.K. label Mr Bongo gave the in-demand Fastingen-92 a more widely available reissue (the original pressing was limited to 100 LPs).
