Andrew Matthews-Owen

Andrew Matthews-Owen is an important collaborative pianist with a strong commitment to contemporary music. He has also recorded solo piano music and is active as an educator and vocal coach. Matthews-Owen was born in Neath, Wales, around 1977 (WalesOnline in early 2009 reported his age as 31). In 1996, he enrolled at Cardiff University, having already taken piano and cello lessons as a youth. He went on to the Royal Academy of Music in London for a master's degree, which he received in 2003 and was later named an honorary associate. Among his teachers were Eugene Asti, Roger Vignoles, and Christine Croshaw, whom he named as a major inspiration. Several awards helped launch Matthews-Owen's career in London, including the Sir Henry Richardson Award for Accompanists, Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Prize, John Ireland Trust Prize, and Ryan Davies Memorial Award. He is the holder of an Outstanding Achievement in Music in Wales award from the Welsh Music Guild. Early on, Matthews-Owen emerged as a champion of Welsh composer Alun Hoddinott, accompanying a variety of singers in Hoddinott's vocal pieces on a Naxos album in 2010. Matthews-Owen specializes in vocal accompaniment and has collaborated with many leading singers, including Claire Booth, Susan Bickley, and Nicky Spence. Appearances as an accompanist have taken him to major venues, including repeat appearances at Southbank Centre (both Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room) and Wigmore Hall in London. He has become increasingly committed to contemporary music and has performed premieres of works by Michael Berkeley, Charlotte Bray, and Augusta Read Thomas, among many others. Matthews-Owen also performs and records as a solo pianist. He issued an album of music by Joseph Phibbs, Hannah Kendall, and Dobrinka Tabakova in 2017. In 2019, he returned on the Nimbus label, accompanying Booth and Bickley on an album of songs by Debussy, Fauré, Satie, and Jonathan Dove. Matthews-Owen is on the faculty at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and is frequently sought out as a vocal coach.
