Madlib's relationship to jazz has always been curiously counterintuitive and deeply moving at the same time: after digging deep into crates filled with Weldon Irvine and Sun Ra and Wayne Shorter, it was inevitable he'd start figuring how to rewire their philosophies on the terms of an MPC-helming beathead. And in the near quarter-century since he first channeled those tendencies into a pseudonymous constellation of jazz alter egos into the extended universe of Yesterdays New Quintet, Madlib's found one of his most reliable collaborators in drummer Karriem Riggins—a counterpart whose own integration of jazz and hip-hop has become something of a traditional fusion in itself. YHWH is LOVE follows 2020's Pardon My French in their teamup as Jahari Massamba Unit, and while that earlier collaboration was a bit looser and more freeform (and occasionally even whimsical), this is where they refocus their collaborative voice into something more rhythmically structured without losing that sense of wandering-vibe adventure. Madlib's instrumental contributions are elusively sourced and evocatively rich as usual: it's rarely clear as to whether he's sampling someone else, sampling his own instrumentation, or just playing it live, and it all feels beside the point anyways; it's practical-effects work that expresses its warmth so effectively it's like he's channeling those sounds straight from his memory bank. And Riggins' drumming provides the tides he swims in, building rippling echoes of '73-'Til-Infinity soul-jazz past and future for those lifelong experiences to play out in new forms. Sometimes it's placid and reflective, like "WITH YHWH LOVE," and its sleepwalk-paced vibraphone fugue. Sometimes it's rousingly funky; check out the flute-pierced deep bass groove of "Stomping Gamay" and the Afro-Brazilian flourishes and buoyant bossa piano of "Massamba Afundance." And in at least a few high points—like the electric-piano burble and Grover Washington Jr-esque sax bounce of "JMU's Voyage"—it coalesces into a restless yet cohesive combination of the two. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
