Nein, die Nappy Roots haben nix mit der New Yorker Livecombo The Roots um Frontmann Black Thought und Drummer ?uestlove zu tun. Vielmehr handelt es sich bei der sechsköpfigen Truppe um den neuen Rapstern am Himmel des Südens. Und so kommt mit "Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz" eines der besten und innovativsten Alben des Jahres 2002 nicht etwa aus den Hip Hop-Hochburgen LA, Atlanta oder New York, sondern aus der Provinz Kentucky.
Eine solche Abgeschiedenheit muss kein Nachteil sein, lässt sie doch einfach mehr Platz für eigenständige Ideen. Natürlich standen auch bei den musikalischen Einflüssen von Big V, Ron Clutch, Scales, R. Prophet, B. Stille und Skinny DeVille in erster Linie die Heroen von Outkast Pate, doch ihre Dirty South-Interpretation lässt dieses Genre in einem ganz neuen Licht erscheinen. Besonders die locker-flockigen G-Funk-Styles-Styles der ersten beiden Outkast-Alben interpretieren sie im modernen 2002er Gewande. Denn während die Vorreiter Big Boi und Andre 3000 immer komplexere Sounds entwickeln, setzen Nappy Roots auf freshe, poppige Hooklines und Harmonien.
Allein drei Tracks hätten das Zeug zum Sommerhit. Bei "Hustla" cruist die Gruppe Snoop Dogg-mäßig durch die staubigen Straßen Kentuckys. Auf "Awnaw" sorgen schöne Orgelmelodien für gute Laune. Der kehlige Soulrefrain tut sein Übriges zur sonnigen Stimmung. Mit "Blowin Trees" stoßen sie dann sogar in langvergessene Arrested Development-Gebiete vor.
Aber das Album hat noch wesentlich mehr Partykracher zu bieten. So findet man neben waschechtem Miami Bass ("Headz Up") auch schnelle Funknummern ("Set I Out", "One Forty") und Rock/Pop-Elemente ("Ho Down"). Ein weiterer Höhepunkt ist das melancholische "Life Is A Bitch", welches getrost als Dirty South-Version von Nas' gleichnamiger Hymne durchgeht. Also an alle Anhänger des beschriebenen Sounds: Abchecken, solange die Sonne uns noch einen vernünftigen Sommer beschert. Im Herbst sind dann wieder deepe Primo-Beats gefragt.

Nein, die Nappy Roots haben nix mit der New Yorker Livecombo The Roots um Frontmann Black Thought und Drummer ?uestlove zu tun. Vielmehr handelt es sich bei der sechsköpfigen Truppe um den neuen Rapstern am Himmel des Südens. Und so kommt mit "Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz" eines der besten und innovativsten Alben des Jahres 2002 nicht etwa aus den Hip Hop-Hochburgen LA, Atlanta oder New York, sondern aus der Provinz Kentucky.
Eine solche Abgeschiedenheit muss kein Nachteil sein, lässt sie doch einfach mehr Platz für eigenständige Ideen. Natürlich standen auch bei den musikalischen Einflüssen von Big V, Ron Clutch, Scales, R. Prophet, B. Stille und Skinny DeVille in erster Linie die Heroen von Outkast Pate, doch ihre Dirty South-Interpretation lässt dieses Genre in einem ganz neuen Licht erscheinen. Besonders die locker-flockigen G-Funk-Styles-Styles der ersten beiden Outkast-Alben interpretieren sie im modernen 2002er Gewande. Denn während die Vorreiter Big Boi und Andre 3000 immer komplexere Sounds entwickeln, setzen Nappy Roots auf freshe, poppige Hooklines und Harmonien.
Allein drei Tracks hätten das Zeug zum Sommerhit. Bei "Hustla" cruist die Gruppe Snoop Dogg-mäßig durch die staubigen Straßen Kentuckys. Auf "Awnaw" sorgen schöne Orgelmelodien für gute Laune. Der kehlige Soulrefrain tut sein Übriges zur sonnigen Stimmung. Mit "Blowin Trees" stoßen sie dann sogar in langvergessene Arrested Development-Gebiete vor.
Aber das Album hat noch wesentlich mehr Partykracher zu bieten. So findet man neben waschechtem Miami Bass ("Headz Up") auch schnelle Funknummern ("Set I Out", "One Forty") und Rock/Pop-Elemente ("Ho Down"). Ein weiterer Höhepunkt ist das melancholische "Life Is A Bitch", welches getrost als Dirty South-Version von Nas' gleichnamiger Hymne durchgeht. Also an alle Anhänger des beschriebenen Sounds: Abchecken, solange die Sonne uns noch einen vernünftigen Sommer beschert. Im Herbst sind dann wieder deepe Primo-Beats gefragt.
