The commercial success of the brass septet Septura has indicated the continuing relevance of brass ensemble music, but it's not quite like the Canadian Brass and other popular brass quintets of the genre's heyday. The group has essayed few crossover pieces, instead focusing on transcriptions for brass ensemble of works in other media. Here the group focuses on British choral and string orchestra music of the 20th century, giving spotless performances. The transcriptions are by the group's founder and trumpeter, Simon Cox, and a septet is quite a different animal from the usual quintet, allowing considerably more detail in the arrangements and giving more of an orchestral feel. This is apparent here in a work like the closing Sonata for string orchestra of William Walton, where very little gets lost in translation. But really, the straightforward versions of choral pieces are equally impressive. Sample one of the Songs of Farewell by Hubert Parry, where the bones of counterpoint hold the music together just as well as in the originals. This album, in fact, works better than some of the earlier ones in Septura's series for just this reason: there's no razzle-dazzle quality, just a fresh presentation of the material. Highly recommended for brass fans.
