Masato Suzuki does not exactly emphasize his family connection to the great Japanese Bach conductor and keyboardist Masaaki Suzuki, saying here only that he received his initial musical training from his parents. On the other hand, his mop-top look clearly emulates that of his father. Whatever the case, the musical results so far bode well for the establishment of a dynasty. The family relationship with the BIS label is continuing, and the label's generally excellent engineering is in evidence here at Toppan Hall in Tokyo. The best news is that Masato is forging a style independent of yet related to that of his father. The trademark detached precision is there, but his interpretations of this monument of keyboard music are his own. Suzuki plays a 1987 copy by Willem Kroesbergen of a 17th century instrument by the Flemish builder Couchet, and it fits his rather dramatic interpretations of these pieces, which are, in general, majestic but clear. He never goes overboard, yet he does not avoid bringing a kind of flair that might not have been associated with his father's keyboard playing. In many pieces, both preludes and fugues, he will take some time at the beginning, as if to usher the listener into the contrapuntal complexities, and this can be quite effective. It also sets up a contrast with the more purely brilliant preludes, which adds variety and dynamics to the big set. His individual pieces are variegated without going all over the map. One looks forward to what is presumably a second Well-Tempered Clavier volume from this rising harpsichordist.
