Bigger in every way. Kritikers Liebling und wandelndes Rap-Gewissen Talib Kweli legt keine Pause ein und droppt nach dem Gratis-Download "Liberation" die nächste LP, die nun wieder käuflich erworben werden will. Das Albumformat hat der student of truth ordentlich aufgepumpt: 75 Minuten oder 20 Stücke drängeln sich auf der regulären Nummer vier um den Platz an der Sonne der Aufmerksamkeit.
Prinzipiell geändert hat sich in musikalischer Hinsicht in so kurzer Zeit erwartungsgemäß wenig bis nichts. Tracks mit viel Kick im Schuh wie zuletzt "Over The Counter" dominieren das erste Drittel. Dabei geht der Ex-Black-Star deduktiv ans Werk. Im Southern-Rap-Tribute "Country Cousins" und via Ansage an Nas ("Hip Hop isn't dead / It was on vacation") das Geschäftliche verhandelt, mit "Hostile Gospel" die erste Killerhook-Bombe aus dem Gesamtkunstwerk gepellt.
Kinderchöre, Klavier-Blingbling, kristallene Snare, E-Streicher - Sinfonismus an allen ungeschliffenen Kanten. Das hat so viel Punch, das ritzt sich in dein Hirn wie dein erster Lieblingsname in die Baumrinde. Auf das große Ganze folgt dann Talib en detail: Gemeinsam mit KRS One besucht der Conscious MC die Alte Schule des Hip Hop und sucht in Doubletime nach dem "Perfect Beat".
Weitere Namen auf der Featureliste sind Dauergast und Fly Guy Kanye "Der Award gehört mir" West und Soulistin Norah Jones. Letztere versüßt die ohnehin schon schmiegsame Plattenmitte und lässt im verschlafenen "Soon The New Day" langsam die Sonne wieder aufgehen. Funky Bettgeschichten mit Saxophon, psychedelisches Glockenspiel und relaxte Kuschelreime wie direkt aus der Federkernmatratze.
Anschließend braucht der Brooklyner erst einmal eine Verschnaufpause, was leider manchen Lückenfüller und das arg cheesy daher gerappte "Hot Thing" mit sich bringt. Gen Ende dreht er aber erneut an der Adrenalinschraube, um mit "Listen" würdig und bekannt appellativ abzutreten – zumindest auf der Promokopie ist hier Schluss. Talib Kweli bangin' on your ear drum, his shit's still fresh and dope. Sicher das!
