Dès l’âge de 10 ans pour être précis, lorsque le jeune Steveland Judkins qui voit le jour le 13 mai 1950 est présenté par Ronnie White des Miracles de Smokey Robinson au charismatique patron de Motown, Berry Gordy. Un premier hit trois ans plus tard (Fingertips Pt.2), l’enfant star aveugle est un bosseur né, malheureusement prisonnier d’un contrat on ne peut plus contraignant, concocté comme à l’accoutumée par un Gordy calculateur. Stevie est LE phénomène de foire du patron de Motown, alignant les disques d’or grâce à un savant mélange de soul, R&B et pop. Il faudra attendre 1970 pour entendre sa première production personnelle aux racines rhythm’n’blues avec Signed, Sealed And Delivered. Le jour de ses 21 ans, le 13 mai 1971, celui qui fut le gentil Little Stevie de Saginaw dans le Michigan saisit sa liberté artistique à bras le corps pour livrer à Gordy la musique dont il rêve nuit et jour. Socialement et politiquement engagé, musicalement à la pointe des nouvelles technologies, le Stevie Wonder nouveau enregistrera quatre albums essentiels slalomant entre soul, funk, rock, R&B et pop avec beaucoup d’originalité : Music Of My Mind (1972), Talking Book (1972), Innervisions (1973) et Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974). Épaulé par l’ingénieur du son Robert Margouleff et le co-producteur Malcolm Cecil, Stevie explore durant trois ans les capacités de synthétiseurs alors en vogue (Moog, Arp, Clavinet) et les diverses techniques d’overdub. Multi-instrumentiste exceptionnel, il est impressionné par le concept musical et idéologique de la Family de Sly Stone et ne cesse de se passer en boucle What’s Going On de Marvin Gaye, son co-locataire Motown. Cet âge d’or, Stevie Wonder ne le retrouvera par la suite que partiellement, exception faite du brillant Songs In The Key Of Life (1976). Mais ces quatre chefs d’œuvre de la période 1972/1974 suffisent pourtant à livrer des perles funk originales : Superstition, Boogie On Reggae Woman ou Higher Ground. Ils influenceront surtout des hordes de musiciens aux quatre coins du monde. Et pas seulement dans la sphère du groove. Car toujours très attachée aux structures mélodiques et harmoniques propres à la pop, la musique de Stevie Wonder s’avère au final une soul totalement unique, qui ne sonne comme aucune autre. © MZ
