Population II

Hailing from Montreal, Population II are a power trio with a sprawling and muscular sound that traverses hard psychedelia, rambling blues, and sludgy proto-metal while nodding to avant-garde jazz and blown-out garage rock. Their earliest releases leaned into the sprawl, featuring side-long tracks that ebbed and flowed in a wash of fuzz and thunder. Once they began to pare down the excess, what was left was compact nuggets of left-field psychedelia. This process started on 2020's À la Ô Terre; their fourth album, 2023's Électrons libres du québec, is even more song-oriented. Inspired by sources exploratory (electric Miles Davis, the progressive sound of 1970s Germany) and raw (the Stooges and punk) the Québécois trio of singer/drummer Pierre-Luc Gratton, guitarist/organist Tristan Lacombe, and bassist Sébastien Provençal made their debut in April 2017, self-releasing an eponymous album consisting of two lengthy tracks recorded live in the studio. Out of the gate, the band's sound was punishingly heavy with epic improvised solos and an overt affinity for the more menacing side of psychedelic rock. A second release, a similarly styled two-song, 20-minute EP called II - Onisme, arrived one year later and helped Population II net a deal with California indie Castle Face, a label co-owned by the Osees' John Dwyer. Shaving down their song lengths but never straying from their aggressively expansive template, the band released their Emmanuel Éthier-produced third album, À la Ô Terre, in late 2020. They began work on their fourth album (again with Éthier), further honing their sound and making more focused, more intense music that still delivers with the heavy impact of their longer, trippier jams. After releasing the first song from the album in May of 2023, the trio headed out on tour. Électrons libres du québec was issued on the Montreal label Bonsound in October.
