Höör Barock
Sweden's Höör Barock is one of Scandinavia's top Baroque ensembles, with a flexible membership that allows the group to take on a variety of repertories. The group has no permanent director but collaborates with other musicians appropriate to the project at hand.
Höör Barock as a formal entity dates to 2012. The players had performed together earlier at the summer Höör Baroque Festival and decided to continue as an ongoing ensemble. The group remains based in the small southern Swedish town of Höör, and its name, in addition to indicating this origin, also involves a wordplay on "höör," the Swedish word for "hear." Höör Barock quickly gained attention beyond local Swedish circles and was signed to the BIS label. The group's core is nine musicians playing historical Baroque instruments, all of whom are professional players from southern Sweden. This group may be augmented in two ways as needed for individual projects. First, Höör Barock has collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Aureliusz Golinski, organist Martin Gester, and the recorder-and-harpsichord team of Dan Laurin and Anna Paradiso, with whom Höör Barock has made several recordings. Also, Höör Barock takes on additional players for pieces written for larger ensembles. The group's aesthetic stresses giving expressive space to each individual musician. Overall, Höör Barock's repertory ranges widely within the Baroque era, from Bach and other contrapuntal masters to Italian virtuoso music to light rococo works.
Höör Barock made its debut on BIS in 2017 with an album of chamber music by Telemann, Corelli, and Bach, featuring Laurin and Paradiso. Höör Barock returned in 2019 with a recording of the Golovinmusiken (Golovin Music), a set of 45 incompletely scored pieces that Höör Barock realized with 18 separate instruments, plus continuo. In 2020, Höör Barock joined several other Baroque ensembles for a recording of Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo.
