The graphics for this Mozart release from Norway's small Lawo label are unusual, giving pride of place to the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and making listeners search for the names of the Mozart works involved, the soloists, and the two conductors in small print. As it happens, though, the labeling is accurate. The Concerto in C major for flute, harp, and orchestra, K. 299, is very often recorded, but recordings that catch its utter pixie-ish charm are rare, and those by full symphony orchestras that do so, even in pared-down contingents, are even rarer. The Oslo Philharmonic gets the inexhaustible well of Mozartian melody and the easy grace in the Concerto for flute and harp. The soloists, flutist Per Flemstrom and harpist Birgitte Volan Havik, are fine, but they are following a note struck by the orchestra from the very first phrases. Nor does it seem to matter very much who the conductor is; both Alan Buribayev in the flute-and-harp concerto and Arvid Engegård in the Sinfonia concertante in E flat major for winds and orchestra, K. 297b, end up with the same perfectly smooth sound. Explain it however-- and fine engineering that brings out the harp without distorting it is part of the magic -- but this is a superlative orchestral recording.
