Schon auf seinem ersten Soloalbum aus dem Jahr 1970 spielte Gitarrist Eric Clapton eine Coverversion eines Songs des einflussreichen Musikers JJ Cale: "After Midnight". Auch später begleitete der Singer/Songwriter ihn immer wieder, ob als Einfluss – den Clapton auch gerne in Interviews nannte – oder als tatsächlicher musikalischer Partner, wie auf dem Duett-Album The Road to Escondido von 2006. Nachdem Cale 2013 starb, nahm Clapton ein ganzes Tribute-Album auf, das im Sommer 2014 unter dem Titel The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale auf den Markt kam. Darauf spielt Clapton zusammen mit einigen namhaften Kollegen wie Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson und John Mayer diverse Cale-Songs; außerdem sind Musiker wie Derek Trucks, Albert Lee, Doyle Bramhall II und Jim Keltner zu hören.
