Ähnlich wie das 1980 veröffentlichte A (das ursprünglich als Soloalbum von Ian Anderson geplant war) zeigt auch die 1982 erschienene Jethro-Tull-Platte The Broadsword and the Beast eine Übergangsphase der Band. Zur Kernmannschaft aus Anderson, Martin Barre und Dave Pegg stießen hier Schlagzeuger Gerry Conway (zuvor bei Fotheringay) und Keyboarder Peter-John Vettese – und erstmals (und gleichzeitig auch zum letzten Mal) holten Jethro Tull mit Paul Samwell-Smith von den Yardbirds einen externen Produzenten hinzu. So fantasylastig wie das Cover fällt die Musik dabei nicht aus – tatsächlich drehen sich die Songs eher um politische Themen. Stilistisch stehen die Songs dabei zwischen dem Siebziger-Folk-Rock der Gruppe und den Synthesizer-Tracks, die dann vor allem das nächste Album Under Wraps (1984) prägen sollten.
