Mit ihren ersten beiden Alben, dem selbstbetitelten Debüt und dem Nachfolger Organisation, zeigten sich Orchestral Manoeuvres in The Dark als experimentierfreudige Synth-Pop-Pioniere, die ihre kreative Elektronik mit großem Gespür für Melodien verbanden - unter anderem auf ihrer Hitsingle "Enola Gay". Das dritte Album Architecture & Morality, erschienen im November 1981, war das erfolgreichste der englischen Gruppe - nicht zuletzt dank der drei Top-5-Singles, die das Album zu bieten hat: das sanfte "Souvenir", das dramatische "Joan of Arc" und die epische Ballade "Maid of Orleans" (#1 in Deutschland). Aber auch darüber hinaus hat die Platte zahlreiche Höhepunkte, zum Beispiel den spannenden Opener "The New Stone Age" oder die Pop-Perle "She's Leaving". "Sealand" und "Georgia" deuten dabei die Richtung an, in die OMD mit ihrem nächsten Album Dazzle Ships gehen sollten.
