The tendency among Britain's collegiate choirs has been to integrate a good deal of contemporary music into concert and recording programs, but here, director Stephen Layton sticks to a traditional program rooted in the 20th century, with just a few excursions into the 19th and the 21st. It is interesting that Layton elsewhere has delved into more novel traditions such as Baltic holy minimalism and American music, but here, approaching the end of his tenure with the Trinity College Choir, Cambridge, he may have wanted to put his stamp on the pure and remarkably durable English tradition. Or perhaps, he just wanted to explore the effect of the radiant, even lush sound of the Trinity College Choir with its adult men and women. A major draw here is the sound, recorded not at Trinity College but at Ely Cathedral with its superb organ. Sample the unearthly shimmering the choir and organ achieve in Herbert Howells' The House of the Mind. The more assertive pieces are equally good, including a pair by Elgar, a Catholic who approached Anglican music only reluctantly but pulled it off beautifully when he did, and the sizable O give thanks to the Lord by James MacMillan, who dove in wholeheartedly. The organ gets a showcase in the form of a Toccata by Francis Pott, and aficionados of English cathedral organs may well want the album for this stirring performance at all. There is plenty of life in the traditional Anglican anthem, as the appearance of this album on classical best-seller charts in the summer of 2023 shows.
