Grâce à deux albums live entrés dans la légende, Johnny Cash a relancé sa carrière à la fin des 60’s, devenant une véritable superstar. Deux disques pas comme les autres car enregistrés en prison. Mais comment l’Homme en noir s’est-il retrouvé dans une salle de concert aussi inhabituelle ?

Si l’édition originale de l’album est la seule à être disponible en Hi-Res 24 bits, la Legacy Edition publiée en 2008 permet d’entendre les répétitions, les deux shows en entier et l’intégralité des interventions de Johnny Cash mais surtout celle du speaker de la prison incitant les détenus à réagir le plus bruyamment possible. Quatre mois plus tard, At Folsom débarque dans les bacs et s’envole à la première place des charts country et la 13e des charts pop. La critique salue unanimement l’originalité de la démarche et fait de Johnny Cash la voix des opprimés, une sorte de Woody Guthrie des temps modernes jonglant avec l’empathie, l’humour et le pathos. La carrière de l’Homme en noir est instantanément relancée. Et la chaîne ABC commence même à lui parler d’un show télévisé à son nom. Un an après Folsom, Cash retourne « au château ». Cette fois plus à l’ouest, au pénitencier de San Quentin. Minutieusement préparé, Johnny Cash At San Quentin est un brin moins puissant que son prédécesseur. Mais tout ce que sous-entend l’univers carcéral est bien présent et le répertoire, en partie différent du live à Folsom, s’enchaîne à un rythme effréné. Histoire de charmer encore plus le jeune public, le disque commence par une reprise de Wanted Man de Bob Dylan. Il présente surtout le bien nommé San Quentin, écrit pour l’occasion, et dont les paroles restent un sommet de la plume cashienne : « San Quentin, you've been livin' hell to me. You've hosted me since 1963. I've seen 'em come and go and I've seen them die. And long ago I stopped asking why. San Quentin, I hate every inch of you. You've cut me and have scarred me through and through. And I'll walk out a wiser weaker man. Mister Congressman, you can't understand. » (« San Quentin, t’as été un véritable enfer pour moi. Tu m'héberges depuis 1963. Je les ai vus venir et je les ai vus mourir. Et il y a longtemps de cela, j'ai cessé de demander pourquoi. San Quentin, je déteste le moindre de tes recoins. Tu m'as coupé et marqué, encore et encore. Et je sortirai d'ici plus sage, plus faible. Monsieur le député, vous ne pouvez pas comprendre »).



Pour Johnny Cash comme pour ses fans, cet enregistrement à San Quentin est un tournant puisque le premier sans le fidèle Luther Perkins, guitariste inventeur du fameux son « boom-chicka-boom », emporté six mois plus tôt dans un incendie à seulement 40 ans, et remplacé par Bob Wootton. Les anecdotes sont légion, comme celle de la fameuse photo où, guitare en bandoulière, le chanteur fait un magnifique doigt d'honneur face à l’objectif du photographe Jim Marshall. L’équipe de Granada TV, présente pour immortaliser le concert, avait envahi la scène et Johnny Cash, n’arrivant pas à la faire déguerpir, hurla « Mais barrez-vous ! », ponctuant son cri d'un majeur. Impossible non plus d’accoler les noms Cash et San Quentin sans mentionner Merle Haggard. Celui qui n’est pas encore une légende de la country était aussi présent dans le public ! Pas le jour de l’enregistrement mais quelques mois plus tôt, quand l’Homme en noir avait donné un concert le jour du réveillon. Haggard ne cessera de raconter plus tard comment le charisme de Cash fut une vraie révélation pour lui…

Le 4 juin 1969, l’album sort enfin, avec sur sa légendaire pochette une superbe photo bleue et noire signée Marshall. Pour la première fois de sa carrière, Cash s’installe en pole position des charts country et pop ! Et le 7 du même mois sur ABC, il présente la première des 58 émissions du Johnny Cash Show pour laquelle il a convié Bob Dylan et Joni Mitchell. Un show qui durera jusqu’en mars 1971 et accueillera notamment Neil Young, Ray Charles, Dusty Springfield, Creedence Clearwater Revival, les Staple Singers, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, James Taylor, Louis Armstrong et Odetta. La résurrection tant artistique que commerciale était inattendue pour Johnny Cash, qui luttait quelques mois plus tôt avec sa récurrente addiction aux drogues. Son statut est désormais celui d’une superstar, à l’image du concert sold out qu’il donne le 5 décembre au Madison Square Garden de New York. Mais rien ne lui apportera jamais la même sensation de surpuissance qu'il a connue dans le pénitencier, comme il le confia au journaliste Bill Flanagan à la fin de sa vie. « A San Quentin, je savais que l’auditoire de la prison m’était complètement acquis et tout ce que j’avais à dire, c’était « Prenez le contrôle ! Cassez tout ! » et ils l’auraient fait ! Et les gardiens le savaient très bien. Franchement c’était très tentant… »
