Il est de bon ton d’affirmer que le Philharmonique de Berlin « n’est pas un orchestre d’opéra », et de préférer mordicus les orchestres « de fosse » pour le répertoire lyrique. Oubliant au passage que bien des orchestres symphoniques ou philharmoniques, dans tant et tant de grandes villes (dont Vienne…) de la sphère germanique – et d’autres – sont exactement les mêmes que ceux qui officient en fosse. Quant à Herbert von Karajan, que l’on aime ou pas, ses capacités de meneur d’un plateau de chanteurs sont parfaitement évidentes. Pour cette Tétralogie enregistrée entre 1966 et 1970 à la Jesus-Christus-Kirche de Berlin, Karajan, l’orchestre et les solistes sont affranchis des contraintes de la scène et des équilibres parfois difficiles à réaliser entre plateau et fosse : une sorte d’idéal, sans doute, même s’il peut en exister d’autres tout aussi défendables. Du côté du plateau, on y entend le Wotan de Fischer-Dieskau pour L’Or du Rhin, celui – plus mâle – de Thomas Stewart donnant la réplique à la Brünnhilde de Régine Crespin pour La Walkyrie, relayée par Helga Dernesch dans Siegfried¬ – le héros étant chanté par Jess Thomas, lui-même relayé par Helge Brilioth dans Le Crépuscule des dieux. La liste des chanteurs est un véritable Gotha de ce qu’il y a de meilleur au monde à ce moment-là, y compris pour les rôles secondaires. L’acoustique de l’unique lieu berlinois, choisi année après année, compense donc les différences vocales que l’on peut imaginer entre les divers chanteurs tenant les mêmes rôles d’un volet à l’autre de la Tétralogie. Quinze heures de musique, dans un enregistrement somptueux et tiré à quatre épingles qui n’a pas pris une ride, qui dit mieux… © SM/Qobuz

Descriptif de l'album

Il est de bon ton d’affirmer que le Philharmonique de Berlin « n’est pas un orchestre d’opéra », et de préférer mordicus les orchestres « de fosse » pour le répertoire lyrique. Oubliant au passage que bien des orchestres symphoniques ou philharmoniques, dans tant et tant de grandes villes (dont Vienne…) de la sphère germanique – et d’autres – sont exactement les mêmes que ceux qui officient en fosse. Quant à Herbert von Karajan, que l’on aime ou pas, ses capacités de meneur d’un plateau de chanteurs sont parfaitement évidentes. Pour cette Tétralogie enregistrée entre 1966 et 1970 à la Jesus-Christus-Kirche de Berlin, Karajan, l’orchestre et les solistes sont affranchis des contraintes de la scène et des équilibres parfois difficiles à réaliser entre plateau et fosse : une sorte d’idéal, sans doute, même s’il peut en exister d’autres tout aussi défendables. Du côté du plateau, on y entend le Wotan de Fischer-Dieskau pour L’Or du Rhin, celui – plus mâle – de Thomas Stewart donnant la réplique à la Brünnhilde de Régine Crespin pour La Walkyrie, relayée par Helga Dernesch dans Siegfried¬ – le héros étant chanté par Jess Thomas, lui-même relayé par Helge Brilioth dans Le Crépuscule des dieux. La liste des chanteurs est un véritable Gotha de ce qu’il y a de meilleur au monde à ce moment-là, y compris pour les rôles secondaires. L’acoustique de l’unique lieu berlinois, choisi année après année, compense donc les différences vocales que l’on peut imaginer entre les divers chanteurs tenant les mêmes rôles d’un volet à l’autre de la Tétralogie. Quinze heures de musique, dans un enregistrement somptueux et tiré à quatre épingles qui n’a pas pris une ride, qui dit mieux… © SM/Qobuz
