A lui seul, l'air d'entrée de Lady Macbeth, Vieni t'affretta, chanté par l'immense Shirley Verrett, rend ce disque immortel ! Mais tout le reste est à l'avenant. Enregistré dans la foulée du spectacle d'anthologie superbement mis en scène par Giorgio Strehler, en 1975 à la Scala de Milan, cet album possède une théâtralité difficile à obtenir en studio. Claudio Abbado dirige avec une souplesse et une éloquence qui donne le vertige. Domingo, Cappuccilli, Ghiaurov sont à leur meilleur. Rarement l'adéquation Shakespeare/Verdi a été captée avec un dramatisme frôlant de si près la perfection.   • A lui seul, l'air d'entrée de Lady Macbeth, Vieni t'affretta, chanté par l'immense Shirley Verrett, rend ce disque immortel ! Mais tout le reste est à l'avenant. Enregistré dans la foulée du spectacle d'anthologie superbement mis en scène par Giorgio Strehler, en 1975 à la Scala de Milan, cet album possède une théâtralité difficile à obtenir en studio. Claudio Abbado dirige avec une souplesse et une éloquence qui donne le vertige. Domingo, Cappuccilli, Ghiaurov sont à leur meilleur. Rarement l'adéquation Shakespeare/Verdi a été captée avec un dramatisme frôlant de si près la perfection. Deutsche Grammophon, le label jaune, le label classique d'excellence ... C'est, peu ou prou, l'image que tout mélomane, ou discophile, retient de cette maison d'édition phonographique créée en 1898 par Emil Berliner pour promouvoir son "gramophone", plus performant que le phonographe de Edison. Pendant longtemps, la Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft fut une marque essentiellement allemande, même si l'immense Caruso fut le premier interprète à enregistrer pour l'entreprise en 1902 et la basse russe Chaliapine le premier à avoir bâti en partie sa carrière grâce à elle.
