Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride et Brian Blade. La simple lecture du casting de RoundAgain déclenche déjà une sorte d’hystérie collective des fans de jazz. Depuis MoodSwing paru en 1994, les membres originaux du premier quartet du saxophoniste n’avaient pas enregistré ensemble. « Nous l'aurions fait il y a dix ans si ça n'avait tenu qu'à moi », précise Mehldau. « Josh, Christian et Brian sont tous mes héros. C'est comme jouer avec les Avengers ! » Comparaison plutôt bien vue tant ces quatre-là font figurent de superhéros de la jazzosphère actuelle. En presque un quart de siècle, leur aura comme leur jeu se sont développés de manière exponentielle. Au point que l’alchimie spirituelle qu'ils développent ici est inamovible. Avec un répertoire flambant neuf (trois compositions de Redman, deux de Mehldau, et une chacun pour McBride et Blade), ils étalent d’entrée de jeu cette complicité qui leur permet de peaufiner un swing renversant, souvent même massif. Sous ses allures de Rolls rutilante qui en laissera certains perplexes, voire blasés, avant même de soulever le capot, RoundAgain est une vraie conversation à quatre. Et de la première minute d’Undertow à la dernière de Your Part to Play, le respect mutuel est au cœur de leur intention comme de leur propos.
