A écouter Pat Metheny, From This Place n’est pas juste un album supplémentaire dans sa discographie déjà XXL. « J’ai attendu toute ma vie pour faire un tel disque », lâche carrément le guitariste du Missouri. « C'est une sorte de point culminant musical, reflétant un large éventail d'expressions qui m'ont intéressé au fil des ans, étalées sur une grande toile, présentées d'une manière qui offre le genre d'opportunités de communication atteignables seulement avec un groupe de musiciens ayant passé des centaines de nuits ensemble à faire de la musique. » Avec son vieux complice batteur Antonio Sanchez, la bassiste Linda May Han Oh, le pianiste Gwilym Simcock et le Hollywood Studio Symphony dirigé par Joel McNeely, Metheny entame son ambitieux projet par une composition de plus de treize minutes, America Undefined, axée autour d’un bel arrangement de Gil Goldstein.
Le lyrisme du thème, ses cambrures très cinématographiques et les interventions inspirées mais jamais bavardes du guitariste posent un décor majestueux. Et les pièges du jazz avec phalange symphonique sont esquivés. Pat Metheny se montre surtout expert en mélodies renversantes. Ce n’est pas une première : avec As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, un album paru en 1981 chez ECM et signé avec le claviériste Lyle Mays (disparu quinze jours avant la sortie de ce From This Place), il excellait déjà dans la narration lyrique parfaitement calibrée. Un travail d’orfèvre qui se retrouve sur Same River, exemple type de la compo pouvant aisément sombrer dans la mièvrerie et le larmoyant, mais qui réussit à n’être que pure beauté. Avec Meshell Ndegeocello au chant, Grégoire Maret à l’harmonica et Luis Conte aux percussions sur certains titres, le guitariste américain a soigneusement choisi ses invités dont les apports confirment eux aussi la précision de sa feuille de route.
