Wenn man an die Größen der klassischen Musik denkt, ist der Name Yo-Yo Ma definitiv einer der ersten, die einem in den Sinn kommen (vor allem seine Einspielungen der Suiten für Violoncello von Bach, Brahms' Trios, Beethovens Konzerte und andere Klassiker), doch hinter Ma's Karriere steckt weit mehr, als man auf den ersten Blick sieht. Yo-Yo Mas Karriere ist sehr facettenreich und er ist bekannt für seine formidable Technik, seinen kraftvollen Sound und seine überschäumende Persönlichkeit.
Die Freude, die er an der Musik findet, zeigt sich besonders in seiner gemeinschaftlichen Arbeit - wie dem Silk Road Project/Ensemble, einer musikalischen Initiative, die das Studium der kulturellen und künstlerischen Traditionen entlang der alten Seidenstraße fördert. Ma spielt und nimmt auch regelmäßig Bluegrass-/Jazz-Fusion-Musik mit einem originellen Ensemble aus Cello, Kontrabass, Mandoline und Geige auf. Dieselbe Formation (manchmal ohne Geige) hat neu arrangierte Versionen von traditionell klassischen Stücken aufgeführt, was ihnen eine ganz neue Dimension verleiht.
