The resurgence of virtuoso recorder music has been a phenomenon mostly of the Netherlands and Britain, but via Quebec's ATMA Classique label comes this entry from Montreal's vibrant historical-performance scene. The sonatas are for recorder (flûte à bec), bassoon, or both, with an expansive and rich continuo group of Baroque cello, harpsichord, and archlute or Baroque guitar. The album has much to recommend it, first and foremost some unusual and attractive pieces. The Recorder Sonata in G major of Nicolas Chédeville was published under Vivaldi's name and was from a set long accepted as his Op. 13. Its opening movement has some motivic interaction between the recorder and the continuo that would have been uncharacteristic of Vivaldi even in 1737, when it was published, and the Pastorale slow movement has a different flavor than Vivaldi's pieces in this mode. But the two outer movements do sound like Vivaldi, and the piece offers an interesting outlook on his celebrity. The sonatas by Vivaldi himself and by Telemann are impressively virtuosic, offering challenges to which recorder player Vincent Lauzer rises, and the Baroque bassoon of Mathieu Lussier has a rarely heard gentle sound. Perhaps most interesting of all, and worth sampling, is the Trio Sonata (in Canon) for recorder, bassoon, and continuo in F major, FWV N:F5, of Johann Friedrich Fasch, a composer known mostly for a single trumpet concerto. All three movements are in canon, a unique and pleasing effect. Downsides include the rather plodding sonatas by Boismortier and the overspacious, indistinct sound environment of the Eglise Saint-Augustin in the Montreal suburb of Mirabel, inexplicably favored by Quebecois engineers. It's a good bet, though, that this will add well-played readings of some fun unknown works to your Baroque shelf or hard drive partition.
