Tyler Gilmore—a composer of large ensemble works who also creates electronic music under the name BlankFo.rms—teams up with stellar jazz pianist Jason Moran and drummer Marcus Gilmore on Refract. The auspicious result is an innovative, highly textured album that features both improvisation along with more composed material.
Working with cassette tapes, analog synthesizers, and other gear, BlankFo.rms creates intriguing atmospheres, partially in real time. His setup allows him to record his bandmates live, tweak the source material and introduce the altered sounds into the playing situation; in turn, Moran and Gilmore can interact with elements refracted through the electronics.
There are no drums on much of the album, but Marcus Gilmore's contributions are key. His well-wrought rhythms and percussion timbres energize the proceedings whenever they appear. On "Tape Loop B I," drum rolls and almost lush brushwork color and push the watery electronics and angular piano lines to great effect. Moran sits out "Tape Loop A" where clattering, syncopated drumming drives BlankFo.rms's perky tones; it's a nice change of pace from the piano-and-electronics pieces.
At times, Refract evokes ambient artists like Harold Budd ("Affectionate Painful") and Brian Eno ("Tape Loop B III"), and, not surprisingly, jazz steps forward at points ("Inward Curve"). But there are vertiginous stretches that startle with their hard-to-place newness. On "Onset I," Moran's fiery playing seems to be transformed by BlankFo.rms and then fed back into the mix, with the pianist alertly responding to the mutant sounds. Or is the electronic musician simply generating material that is playing off of Moran's performance? Either way, the results make for intriguingly strange music.
