Nachdem er mit seiner Dark-Knight-Trilogie dem Superhelden Batman ein neues Gesicht gegeben hatte, betreute Regisseur Christopher Nolan als Produzent gleich die nächste Helden-Neuauflage: Mit dem von Zack Snyder inszenierten Film Man of Steel wurde der altehrwürdige Superman ins Jahr 2013 geholt. Obwohl er sich zunächst sträubte, kam Dark-Knight-Komponist Hans Zimmer auch bei Man of Steel an Bord und steuerte einen adäquat bombastischen Score bei. Dabei wurde auf das klassische John-Williams-Thema der alten Filme verzichtet – wie auch der Film selbst ist Zimmers Musik ein völliger Neustart. Wobei natürlich die typischen Zimmer-Elemente allesamt vertreten sind: epische Größe, Chöre, kraftvolle Streicher, harte Rhythmen, und im Kontrast dagegen dann wieder ruhige Töne und ein verhaltenes Klavierthema. Das Soundtrackalbum ist neben der regulären Version auch in einer Deluxe-Edition erschienen, die neben einer zweiten CD mit fast 60 Minuten Spielzeit auch ein 32-seitiges Booklet und diverse Superman-Schmankerl enthält.
