David Popper, a friend to both Brahms and Liszt, was enormously popular in the late 19th century and was almost entirely forgotten in the 20th except for a book of etudes called the High School of Cello Playing. He was known as the Liszt of the cello, and he did indeed make a name as a traveling virtuoso who composed much of his own music, but the comparison doesn't quite give the right flavor. His music is more Brahmsian than Lisztian, with virtuoso elements more in the ornamentation than in big, dramatic gestures. He wrote four cello concertos that have been recorded from time to time, but shorter works like the ones here are probably stronger; as a composer, he was no Brahms, but he incorporated exotic and virtuoso elements cleanly into classical structures. The set of five Spanische Tänze, Op. 54, would enliven any cello recital. Cellist Martin Rummel (often with pianist Mari Kato, who appears here) has championed Popper's music, and he has honed an attractive warm tone that one supposes must be close to what Popper himself produced. Here, Rummel makes an especially strong case for this repertory.
