Nachdem sie mit ihrer ersten Band Waterface den ersten musikalischen Versuch getestet haben, fanden Schlagzeuger Ben Byrne und Bassist James Stelfox Anfang der 2000er Jahre eine klare Richtung für eine neue Band: den Namen "Starsailor", der von Tim Buckleys gleichnamigem Album abgeleitet ist, und einen alternativen Rocksound, der auf der aktuellen Britpop-Welle schwimmt. Zu den beiden englischen Gründern gesellten sich Barry Westhead am Keyboard und James Walsh mit seinem mitreißenden Gesang, der an Alex Turner und Richard Ashcroft erinnerte. Ihr Debütalbum Love Is Here, das 2001 bei EMI Records erschien, war bereits ein großer Hit für das britische Publikum. Zwei Jahre später folgte Silence Is Easy mit der bekanntesten Single der Band, Four to the Floor. Drei Jahre später wurde der Song von White Duke neu abgemischt und half der englischen Band, das Interesse des Publikums abseits der Insel zu gewinnen. Und in der Tat ist es ruhig um die Band, deren Karriere trotz der durchweg positiven Resonanz von mehreren Unterbrechungen geprägt war. Sieben Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von All This Life erscheint 2024 ihr neues Album Where The Wild Things Grow.
