Malakai

A gifted U.K. chorister with a passion for opera, Malakai M. Bayoh made the 2023 final of ITV's Britain's Got Talent while still in his early teens. Born in 2010, in Gravesend, Kent to Sierra Leonean parents, Bayoh was ultimately raised in Kennington, South London. He joined St. George's Cathedral Choir, Southwark, as a seven-year-old after his mother noticed that he had an uncommon singing talent. By the time Bayoh was 11, he was studying at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, Kensington, where he joined their liturgical choir, the Schola Cantorum, as a treble singer. Experience gained as a member of the choir filled him with confidence and he accepted new opportunities that came his way. In November 2022, Bayoh performed as Oberto in a Royal Opera House production of Handel's Alcina, while still only 12 years old. The following month he sang duet renditions of "O Holy Night" and "Walking in the Air" for Classic FM alongside Aled Jones, performances which were streamed over a million times. In April 2023, Bayoh made his solo debut at the Royal Albert Hall's Classic FM Live event. He performed "Alleluia" from Mozart's Exsultate, jubilate and Handel's aria "Lascia ch'io pianga" accompanied by the English National Opera Orchestra, and conducted by Paul Daniel. That same month, ITV broadcast his successful Manchester audition for Britain's Got Talent, in which a rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu" won him a place in the competition's live shows. By June, he'd reached the final, which was ultimately won by Viggo Venn, the Norwegian clown and comedian. However, Bayoh finished fourth out of 11 contestants, giving enough exposure to warrant a record deal with Decca's Classic FM imprint, which chose to market him using a mononym, Malakai. In July, the label issued Golden, Malakai's debut solo album, which was recorded in a matter of days. It featured much of the material he sang on Britain's Got Talent -- along with a few of his opera favorites -- and reached both the summit of the U.K. Classical Album Chart and the Top Ten of the wider U.K. Album Chart.
