JD Allen
JD Allen is an American jazz saxophonist and composer whose playing was described by the New York Times in 2017 as "an immersive, purifying experience" with a sound that was "somewhere between mournful and swaggering". The newspaper praised his work with his trio of ten years - Gregg August on bass and Rudy Royston on drums - and noted that his 2016 album, 'Americana: Musings On Jazz and Blues', had earned "broad acclaim". It went to number ten on Billboard's Jazz Albums Chart.
Born in Detroit, Michigan he started playing at a young age, accompanied jazz stars such as George Cables, Jack Dejohnette and Betty Carter and later played as a sideman with artists including Cindy Blackman, Victor Lewis, Orrin Evans, Winard Harper, Lisa Hilton and Jeremy Pelt. He made his debut recording as leader with 'In Search of JD Allen' in 1999 and he has released several well-regarded albums since then including 'I Am I Am' (2008), 'Shine!' (2009), 'Victory!' (2011), 'The Matador and the Bull' (2012) and 'Grace' (2013). His 2018 schedule included a performance at Jazz Meets World in Prague.
