Peter Graham

Composer Peter Graham is among the most important figures writing new music in the brass band tradition. He has often been associated with the Black Dyke Band. Graham was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1958. He attended the University of Edinburgh and, devoting himself to composition for brass band, moved to London to study with composer Edward Gregson at Goldsmiths College, University of London, eventually earning a PhD. Graham lived in New York and spent the years from 1983 to 1986 working as an editor for a licensing agency and as a freelance composer and arranger. His 1983 work Dimensions established his reputation as a composer. Graham returned to Britain in 1986 and devoted himself to composition while teaching at the University of Salford. An early breakthrough was a commission to provide arrangements for percussionist Evelyn Glennie's 1999 album Reflected in Brass, a collaboration with the Black Dyke Band. That album, which also featured Graham's original composition Cartoon Music, garnered a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album. Graham's compositions for brass band, such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth, The Essence of Time, and Montage, have been popular and played by bands in several countries. He served as Music Associate with the Black Dyke Band from 1997 to 2004 and as composer-in-residence with His Majesty's Coldstream Guards Band, but his works have been performed by many other groups. These include the United States Air Force Band, the Royal Norwegian Navy Band, and the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. His works have been frequently performed by brass and wind bands in the U.S., where Oklahoma's Broken Arrow High School Band took his Harrison's Dream to a Bands of America Grand National Championship in 2006. Graham has remained highly prolific as a composer, with new works for band appearing through the 2010s and into the 2020s, and many of his works have been used as test compositions in brass band compositions. He has written a few non-band works, such as a Suite for solo cello in 2005. Graham's works have been recorded several times by the Black Dyke Band; the euphonium concerto Force of Nature appeared on an album by that name in 2023. Many other groups, including the Williams Fairey Band and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble, have recorded his music, and some 50 of his works had appeared on recordings by the mid-2020s.
