A lovely disc and a wonderful way to discover the vocal works of Joseph Martin Kraus, this 1990 recording called Arie e Cantate features soprano Barbara Bonney and tenor Claes-Håkan Ahnsjo with conductor Thomas Schuback leading the Drottingholm Orchestra. Of course, it will be the dulcet tones of soprano Bonney that draw most prospective listeners: Bonney's sweet voice has graced many internationally successful recordings and her contribution here is as appealing as any of her better-known recordings. Her performance of Proserpin's aria "At the Joy of a Heart" is exquisitely lyrical and her Innocente donzelletta is deeply moving. But tenor Ahnsjo is hardly less impressive and his performance of Misero paragoletto is especially affecting. And when the two sing duets, as in the fiery Non Temer, the result is incendiary. Conductor Schuback and the Drottingholm Orchestra accompany them with subtlety, sympathy, and strength. Musica Sveciae's recording is rich and warm and full.
