Considering the Dirty South movement's overnight success in the early 2000s when rappers like Nelly and Ludicris came out of nowhere to go multi-platinum, it's perhaps no surprise to see newcomers like Miracle get the glossy, major-label treatment. And, indeed, Miracle's debut album on Universal is no doubt glossy and radio-ready. The rapper not only sounds strikingly similar to Nelly, but happens to call Atlanta, GA, home, like Ludicris. In sum, Miracle has the makings of an overnight sensation -- from his style and his locale to his tattoos and producers. He's essentially Universal's attempt to break into the suddenly lucrative Dirty South market. All of this isn't meant to discount Miracle's ability, of course. As Keep It Country illustrates, the young rapper no doubt has ample charisma and character, along with a lightning-quick delivery and the necessary manic tendencies. Furthermore, he has an ace production team in Gene Griffin and Paul Wright, aka Sound of Atlanta. These two produce the entire album and know the trademark Dirty South production style inside out: drum machine pitter-patter, slamming bass beats, exuberant synth riffs, and so on. In fact, from top to bottom, Keep It Country plays like a Dirty South album should. Yet, ironically, this ends up being the album's most glaring flaw -- it's a very calculated approach, far too obvious. By late 2001, much of what Miracle offers on this album had descended from being unique to being clichéd. Whether he's rapping about representing the country, bouncing dat ass, getting da club krunk, or himself, you've heard all this before. And, quite frankly, it all sounded better the first time around. Albums like this are a bad omen for the Dirty South's staying power -- the floodgates need to close.
