Der Slogan „British Jazz Explosion“, mit dem Universal auf die Vielfalt des Jazz aus Großbritannien hinweist, macht neugierig. Einen Vorgeschmack gaben bereits Tubby Hayes’ zuvor erschienene „Fontana Recordings 1961-1969“. Mit der Compilation „Journeys In Modern Jazz: Britain“ – weitere sind angekündigt – richtet sich der Schwerpunkt auf Sessions aus dem Fundus legendärer Labels, wie Decca, Deram und Philips.
In dem über 60-seitigen Booklet wird auf die Geschichte des britischen Modern Jazz eingegangen. Stimmige Künstlerporträts und diskografische Hinweise runden die Edition ab, die in ihrer mustergültigen Aufmachung die Grenzen von Musik-Streaming-Diensten aufzeigt. Der Sampler hat zudem die Funktion, mit ausgesuchten Stücken schon im Vorfeld auf die dazugehörigen LPs hinzuweisen, die nach und nach im Original-Cover plus Liner-Notes veröffentlicht werden.
Den Anfang macht das Don Rendell Quintet mit dem Album „Space Walk“. Da liefert sich in „A Matter Of Time“, einem turbulenten Titel mit Blues-Waltz-Touch, der Leader energische Improvisationsgefechte mit dem Tenorsaxofonisten Stan Robinson. Ken Wheeler und das John Dankworth Orchestra vertonen auf „Windmill Tilter“ die Abenteuer des in seinen Ritterphantasmen gefangenen Don Quijote, wobei in „Don The Dreamer“ Wheelers Trompeten-Chorusse ein musikalisches Porträt der Romanfigur zeichnen. Eine interessante Variante gegenüber amerikanischen Big Bands stellt The New Jazz Orchestra auf „Le déjeuner sur l ̓herbe“ vor; in dem Titel „Angle“ lässt es impressionistische Klangbilder mit heißen Jazz-Auslegungen verschmelzen.
