The CD cover and online graphics for this release give the buyer very little information relevant to its distinctive qualities. Most important is that Bach's six suites for solo cello are here played on a viola, by veteran French violist Gérard Caussé. Even more exotically, they are interspersed with poems, or parts of them (they are read in French, and not printed in any language), by Rainer Maria Rilke. The idea seems to be that these productions share a certain gnomic, sparse quality. Caussé does well in extending these traits in his playing. A specialist in contemporary repertoire, his performances are crisply delivered dramatic utterances, not emphasizing the dance rhythms of the suites but not playing against them for emotion, either. He's quite effective in the lightly delivered gigue finale of the Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008, for example, conveying the mystery in the knotted line that suggests a fugue without ever quite being one. Whether or not the viola truly works in these suites is a matter of taste, however; they're very idiomatically written for the cello, and although Caussé's 16th-century viola has a lovely clear tone, the very clearly planned effects of the cello's bottom register are mostly lost. This release will interest Francophones intrigued by unusual ways of presenting music and text together; the Bach-Rilke connection seems unlikely, but it is well executed here and makes an ineffable kind of sense.
