The Ashes

Formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, this folk rock attraction initially comprised Pat Taylor (vocals), John Merrill (guitar), Al Brackett (bass) and Spencer Dryden (b. 7 April 1938, New York City, New York, USA, d. 11 January 2005, Petaluma, California, USA; drums), although Jim Voigt succeeded the latter on his departure for Jefferson Airplane in 1966. The reshaped line-up completed two singles, including a cover version of Paul Simon’s ‘Homeward Bound’, before Taylor was replaced by Sandi Robinson. Guitarist Lance Fent was also added to the band which, in late 1966, took the name the Peanut Butter Conspiracy. The Ashes’ legacy was not altogether forgotten as several archive selections appeared on the compilation West Coast Love-In (1967). The discovery of further unreleased recordings led to the release of The Ashes in 1968.
