Ruth Lorenzo

Ruth Lorenzo was no stranger to musical talent contests when she sang for her home country of Spain in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest; six years previously, she had made her way to the U.K., where she competed in the fifth season of The X Factor. Her powerful, pitch-perfect delivery was a hit with judges and fans alike, and she finished in fifth place. After her bilingual Eurovision entry, "Dancing in the Rain," hit the Top Five in Spain, her debut album, 2014's Planeta Azul, climbed into the Top Three. The pop singer went all the way to number one with the single "Voces" in 2016 before delivering another hit album, Loveaholic, in 2018. The anthemic title track to her third long-player, "Crisálida," saw release in 2021. Born Ruth Lorenzo Pascual in Murcia in 1982, she began singing from a very early age, mimicking opera diva Montserrat Caballé and songs from the musical Annie. After her family moved to the U.S. when she was ten, she was encouraged in her singing by her schoolteachers. Singing and dance classes followed, as did performances in amateur productions of The Phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady. When she was 16, her family moved back to Spain, and it was at this time that she seriously considered music as a career. Lorenzo tried out for the Spanish TV talent contest Operación Triunfo but didn't make it past the auditions. She then formed a band and toured around Spain for several years before they eventually broke up. Finally, she took a job with a holiday resort company, where she worked both in PR and as a performer in the resort's hotels. It was Lorenzo's U.K. X Factor exposure in 2008 that finally paved the way for her success in Spain. After her fifth-place finish, she signed with Virgin EMI and spent two years writing songs for a debut album. She ultimately parted ways with the label over creative differences and released her debut single, "Burn," independently with the help of crowdfunding. Issued in 2011 and performed with her newly formed backing band the Raspberry Pattern, it went to number 16 in Spain. Extensive touring throughout Europe then helped broaden her audience, and she was voted the Spanish people's favorite to represent them at the 2014 Eurovision Contest. Her entry, the epic bilingual ballad "Dancing in the Rain," led her to a tenth-place finish. Meanwhile, the song reached number five on the singles chart in Spain. That was followed in October 2014 by a Top Three appearance on the album chart by her full-length debut, Planeta Azul. Issued on Roster Records, it included two more Top Ten singles, "99" and "Gigantes." Lorenzo topped the singles chart in 2016 with the charity track "Voces" (Universal), then released what would be her sixth Top Ten single, "Good Girls Don't Lie," a year later. It was included on her sophomore album, Top Ten release Loveaholic. Put out on Raspberry Records in 2018, it was produced by Red Triangle and included a collaboration with guitarist Jeff Beck ("Another Day"). The stand-alone single "Underworld" followed in 2019 before Lorenzo presented songs from her third album, Crisálida, including January 2021's "Crisálida."
