Rafael Cesario

Brazilian cellist Rafael Cesario is active as an orchestral musician, chamber music player, concerto soloist, and educator. He is a member of the Quarteto de Cordas da Cidade de São Paulo and has collaborated with various other chamber musicians. Cesario earned a master's degree from the University of São Paulo. He went on to France for a second graduate degree, earning a Perfectionnement diploma from the Conservatoire à rayonnement départemental du Val de Bièvre outside Paris. There, his principal teacher was Romain Garioud. Cesario also took master classes from a variety of world-class musicians, including Alisa Weilerstein, Pieter Wispelwey, Sol Gabetta, Eduardo Bello, and Antonio Meneses. Back in Brazil, he began to find guest concerto slots with some of the country's leading orchestras, including the São Paulo Municipal Symphony Orchestra and the University of São Paulo Symphonic Orchestra. In 2017, Cesario made several appearances at Brazil's Trancoso Music Festival, performing solo parts and appearing in chamber music with flutist Mathieu Dufour and oboist Andreas Wittmann, both of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Cesario released the albums Um Outro Adeus and Meu Brazil with pianist André Mehmari and Beethoven Variations with pianist Marcos Aragoni. Cesario's career as both a soloist and chamber player has continued to develop. He joined the Quarteto de Cordas da Cidade de São Paulo ("São Paulo City String Quartet") and has given recitals with piano and other chamber music formations. Cesario is also an educator and has performed frequently in institutional settings; at the Violin Festspiele Brazil in Curitiba, he appeared as a soloist with the Paraná Symphony Orchestra, and he often plays chamber music in his capacity as a faculty member at the Instituto Baccarelli in São Paulo. Cesario appeared on a pair of albums by pop artist Giulia Be, Disco Voador (2022) and Beyond the Universe (2023). In 2024, he appeared with violinist Emmanuele Baldini on the album José Antonio de Almeida Prado: Works for Violin and Cello.
