Quirine Viersen

Quirine Viersen is a Dutch cellist. She received her first lessons from her father, cellist Yke Viersen, a member of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She later studied with Jean Decroos, Dmitri Ferschtman, and Heinrich Schiff. She is the winner of several major competitions, such as the 1990 Rostropovich Competition in Paris, the 1991 International Cello Competition in Helsinki, and the 1994 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, additionally receiving the Dutch Music Award and the 2000 Credit Suisse Groupe's Young Artist Award, which enabled her to perform at the 2000 Lucerne Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta. Viersen has performed with many orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and many others. She is also an avid chamber musician, performing in a duo with pianist Silke Avenhaus, and appearing with violinists Antje Weithaas, Benjamin Schmid, and Hanna Weinmeister. Viersen has recorded for Globe Records, Et'cetera, Talent Records, and Columns Classics.
