Marten Jansson

Mårten Jansson is active as a composer of choral music, choral conductor, and educator. Jansson was born in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1965 and still lives there with his family. He studied musicology and music pedagogy at Uppsala University and then went on to the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, where he earned an M.F.A. degree with specialties in Dalcroze eurhythmics and voice. As of 2020, he was working toward a doctoral degree in composition at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, studying with Paul Mealor. Jansson has had a long career as a music educator, teaching music theory, voice, and conducting and directing the choir at the Bolandgymnasiet in Uppsala from 1995 to 2014. Since 1999, he has taught music theory and voice and directed the choir at the Kulturskolan in Uppsala. Jansson's compositional imagination was fired when he became the conductor of Carmen, one of Sweden's most prominent women's choirs, in 1994. "The knowledge that what I wrote at night would be tested the next evening was a driving force that not so many other composers were lucky to have," he stated on his website. Jansson wrote many compositions for the choir and remained its director until it disbanded in 2010. Since then, he has continued to write for female choirs and composed one work, Erlkönig, for male choir, but has also written for mixed choirs. Most of his music is sacred. In 2015, Jansson's Lo, how a rose was recorded by Cappella SF on their album Light of Gold. He was signed by the publisher Bärenreiter, which has publicized his music internationally. In 2018, Jansson and the publisher organized an international competition for choirs, which would send video recordings of themselves singing Jansson's work Maria; the first prize was a new work by Jansson written especially for the winning choir. In 2022, the prestigious small English choir Voces8 released the album Mårten Jansson: Requiem Novum.
